On February 18th we had our first annual predator hunting competition. As you could probably see from our forums there was a lot of smack talking going on leading up to this event which led to it being called the “Lenny Big Time Coyote Classic”. This was an event we decided to start simply so we could have some clean competitive fun and fellowship within our group and invite some friends.
The rules and scoring were set up by Wayne Liggett with everyone voicing their input. The first and most important rule was to follow all state regulations. Then we had a points system outlined for animals taken, whether an adult or youth took them, and what type of weapon was used. In addition to this there was a scavenger hunt included that awarded points for those rare finds in the field such as: deer droppings, turkey feather, skull, antler shed, etc.
There were four teams assembled for this adventure and of course they had to adopt some names. Chip Crafton and Neil Pinkston’s team was “Night Stalkers”(a.k.a. "Teen Spirit"), Wayne Liggett and Dustan Risley’s team was ‘Heavy Duty”, John Jacobs and Jeff Coomes team was “Wiggle Britches” (not sure how and why that was decided), and Len Stoval, Jon Armstrong, and Jamie Crawford’s team was “The Predator Masters”. It was disappointing that Len Stoval and his reputation couldn’t participate with his team due to work schedules. We ended up with about 18-20 people in the field for this event.
The hunting started at midnight on Friday and ended one-half hour after sunset on Saturday. There were no coyotes killed during this event but one coon and one crow was taken over 150 yards. We are thinking about changing the name of this event to the “Crow Masters”. After the hunt everyone and their families met at the local Golden Coral for dinner and fellowship. Everyone had a great time and fellowship is the most important part of hunting, so we will mark this one as a success and look forward to next year’s classic.
