2011 Spring Turkey Season |
|
Youth turkey season in KY begins on April 2 and two weeks following that the “big Boy “season begins!! Youth season is just a little over a week away and as I look out the windows at our office the snow is falling and the trees are in full bloom because we have already had 80 degree weather here! To say the weather here in Western KY changes a lot would be an understatement! The weather has not dampened our excitement to get out in the woods for the first time in a couple of months, especially considering this will be the first time some of our little men will be toting shotguns in search of their first longbeard. I hope for a “text book” hunt for all of you guys, you know the kind of which I am speaking.
A clear day break about 60 degrees, your set up on a small clearing, the woods just staring to green up and come to life, it’s one of those mornings God made for turkey hunting and you praise him for that! You hit a few soft purrs on your custom slate then a few yelps and you hear it, an unmistakable close gobble; I can hear it in my head right now. Another round of yelps (this time a little louder) from a diaphragm call and he cuts you off before you finish your calling sequence. You push that shotgun a little tighter to your shoulder and the old bird steps out in full strut. At this point my excitement turns my stomach upside down and converts it to nervous energy. Let him close in on your decoy setup, allow him to relax and get curious about these funny looking plastic birds. My thumb instinctively moves the safety off, my index finger touches the cold trigger, I start to squeeze and the thunderous boom breaks the sanctity of the morning. Then I am up half jogging half sprinting towards a flapping pile of wings, sounds like a good time to me, are you ready?
